CNN’s Kaitlan Collins says the hostility from President Donald Trump doesn’t wait for her to speak. She’s walked into the Oval Office on behalf of the TV pool, and before she’s asked a single question, he’s started criticizing her.
“And he starts criticizing me,” she told Jon Stewart on The Daily Show in late July, days after Trump targeted her at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. “So it’s not even always just about the questions. Sometimes it’s just my presence in the room.”
Collins traces it back to how she covers him. She’s used the same approach the entire time she’s been on the beat, never getting pulled into a back-and-forth and always steering things back to the question. He surrounds himself with people who praise him or laugh at his jokes, she said, and a critical question about his policy or his strategy in the Iran war gets a different response.
She said he lashes out when confronted with a critical question.
For her, the point isn’t personal. She says her CNN colleagues and the wider press corps do the work of asking tough questions and reporting it out. “You don’t have to smile while you’re doing that, and I think that’s what’s important.”
