There’s a Fan Theory That Cristina Yang Will Return to ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ in Season 23

For more than a decade, Grey’s Anatomy fans have had to accept one painful reality: Cristina Yang is not coming back.

Sandra Oh left the series in 2014 after 10 seasons, giving Cristina an unusually satisfying exit. She wasn’t killed off, she wasn’t forced out of medicine, and she didn’t leave Seattle because her career had fallen apart. Instead, Cristina moved to Switzerland to take over the Klausman Institute for Medical Research and continued building the extraordinary career she had always wanted.

And for years, Sandra Oh herself made it pretty clear that she had moved on from the character, repeatedly saying she was not returning to the show.

But now, fans have a new reason to wonder if Cristina could make a brief return to Grey’s Anatomy in Season 23 — and it all started with one very suspicious Instagram post from ABC.

On Wednesday, August 12, the official GreysABC account shared a photo of Sandra Oh in character as Cristina Yang with the caption: “Heavy on the Yang.”

Grey’s Anatomy fans immediately did what Grey’s Anatomy fans do best: started investigating. The comments quickly filled with theories that ABC wouldn’t randomly post a photo of one of the show’s most beloved characters — especially after more than a decade — unless there was something more to it.

If Cristina were ever going to make a brief return, Season 23 might actually provide the perfect excuse. Meredith Grey and Nick Marsh are engaged, meaning a wedding is potentially on the horizon for one of the show’s most important characters. And while Meredith has reportedly made it clear that she doesn’t want a traditional wedding, fans are naturally wondering whether the milestone could bring some familiar faces back to Seattle.

Cristina is Meredith’s person. Their friendship is one of the defining relationships of Grey’s Anatomy. Even after Cristina left Seattle, the show continued to reference their relationship, with Cristina remaining an important part of Meredith’s life from afar. So if Meredith were getting married, it would make perfect emotional sense for Cristina to show up — even if only briefly.

She wouldn’t have to move back to Seattle. She wouldn’t need a major storyline. She could simply visit to celebrate Meredith’s major life event.

Of course, there’s one very large obstacle standing in the way of this theory: Sandra Oh. Since leaving, she has repeatedly made it clear that she wasn’t interested in returning. She’s said she loved the show and understood why audiences continued to ask about Cristina, but she had personally moved on.

“In some ways, you do your work as a bubble and you let it go,” Oh said. “I left that show… So in my mind, it’s gone.”

ABC’s post could simply be a nostalgic social-media post. Networks regularly resurface beloved characters and actors to capitalize on fan nostalgia and Grey’s Anatomy has been doing that for years.

For now, fans are going to have to read into one cryptic ABC caption and hope for the best.
