A Police Report Says Brian Hickerson Didn’t Get Emotional Until EMS Declared Hayden Panettiere Dead

Brian Hickerson and his brother were both inside the South Carolina apartment when Hayden Panettiere went into cardiac arrest Sunday. The police report says Hickerson stayed composed while EMS worked on her, and only broke down once they pronounced her dead.

A police report identifies Brian Hickerson, Panettiere’s on-again, off-again boyfriend, and his brother Zach as present inside the Judson Mill Lofts complex in Greenville when she died at 36. The responding officer wrote that Zach was “very emotional” while paramedics were “working on Hayden,” and that Brian didn’t become visibly emotional until she was declared dead.

Hickerson also showed police a “bag of medication” Panettiere was taking, according to the heavily redacted report obtained by NBC News. The officer said he wore a body camera through the response, though that footage hasn’t been released.

Authorities got a 911 call around 1:50 p.m. Sunday reporting a cardiac arrest, placed by an acquaintance of Panettiere’s. She was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m., and the coroner has said her cause of death is pending further investigation after an autopsy found no signs of trauma.

Panettiere’s relationship with Hickerson appeared to end in 2020 amid domestic violence allegations. He was arrested in May 2019 on an allegation of injuring a spouse or girlfriend, pleaded no contest in April 2021, and was sentenced to four years’ probation. In her memoir “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” published three months before she died, Panettiere wrote that he once beat her so badly she didn’t leave the house for weeks.
