Five years into her relationship with Danny Fujikawa, Kate Hudson still hasn’t walked down the aisle — and she says the sticking point is the price tag. Every possible plan gets complicated once they start counting relatives, and her ideal celebration sounds more like a relaxed family party than a massive production.

In that, Hudson is following her mother’s lead. Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell have been together since 1983 without ever marrying, and Kate has cited them as the reason she’s relaxed about the difference between engaged and married.

On her Sibling Revelry podcast, Hudson explained that Fujikawa wants a small wedding, but their huge blended family makes that difficult. Their relatives alone would put the guest list at about 50 people before anyone else is invited, and she kept returning to the cost of a full wedding as they talked through the options.
