Trump named three outlets in the Truth Social post: CNN, MS NOW and Politico, all barred “as a result of their constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS.” He said more names are coming.
He didn’t define the ban. A post isn’t a credentialing order, and nothing spells out whether “the White House” means the building, the briefing room, the press pool, or the restricted Oval Office and Air Force One spaces. Until White House Communications or the Secret Service acts, it stays an instruction rather than a completed lockout. This week’s pool rotation, set before the post, had already listed CNN and Politico on some days, with NBC as Friday’s TV pooler.
Two of Trump’s justifications don’t hold up. He wrote that MS NOW renamed itself from MSNBC over “lack of viewership and credibility,” but the channel rebranded in November 2025 because Comcast spun its cable networks into a company called Versant and wanted distance from the NBC News brand. That’s a corporate split, not a ratings confession. His claim that Politico took an “illegal $8 million subscription” from the Biden government recycles a story from early 2025: federal agencies did pay Politico more than $8 million in FY2024, but for subscriptions to Politico Pro and related policy products, not a subsidy. FactCheck.org, Snopes and others called the payoff framing misleading, and Trump’s first term bought the same subscriptions.
There’s a template for what he’s proposing. In 2025, the White House barred the Associated Press from the Oval Office and Air Force One after AP wouldn’t adopt “Gulf of America.” A Trump-appointed judge ordered AP restored, ruling the government can’t shut the door on outlets over viewpoint once it opens it to others, though a D.C. Circuit panel later stayed that order 2-1. The open question is whether courts treat the briefing room, the Oval Office and Air Force One as the same kind of space.
Politico is the odd one in the group: an Axel Springer-owned policy shop selling a product the government itself buys. CNN, MS NOW and Politico have not confirmed how they’ll respond.
