Max Greenfield Says Taylor Swift Was a “Better Actor Than All Of Us” During Her 2013 New Girl Cameo

More than a decade after Taylor Swift stepped onto the set of New Girl, one of her co-stars still can’t shake the impression she left — or, for that matter, her music.

The story surfaced again on the Aug. 14 episode of Jake Shane’s Therapuss podcast, where Max Greenfield reflected on the singer’s brief run on the Fox sitcom. What began as a passing conversation between takes, it turns out, has stayed with him for years.

Greenfield asked Taylor Swift on set whether she’d rather play an intimate crowd or a big arena. Her answer stuck with him.

“She goes, ‘If you could fill the ocean with people, I’d like to play for that,'” Greenfield recalled, remembering a Swift who “wasn’t quite yet Taylor” but was already outclassing the cast — a “better actor than all of us,” as he put it.

Swift played Elaine in the 2013 season 2 finale, “Elaine’s Big Day,” a wedding guest who objects to the ceremony and confesses her love for the groom. It was an onscreen moment that echoed her own 2010 song “Speak Now,” a bit of casting that felt almost too on the nose for anyone paying attention.

Beyond her performance, what has lingered for Greenfield is the person. He said Swift was “so kind” on set, and admitted he still can’t get through her music without breaking down. He named “New Year’s Day” off Reputation as his favorite, saying he listens to it every morning and it makes him cry — then started singing it before stopping himself: “I’m going to start crying, I don’t want to do it.”

He also told Shane his Eras Tour secret songs were “Our Song” and “You Are in Love,” the kind of deep-cut choices that mark him as a genuine fan rather than a casual co-star trading on a famous credit.

Swift herself has said little about her New Girl stint, but she’s left a similar impression on others who worked with her. Jake Johnson told his own version on the We’re Here to Help podcast in 2024, recalling that he first met her as “a random blonde lady sitting in one of the chairs.” According to Johnson, she’d asked to get ready with everybody else on set instead of keeping to her own team — a small gesture that, alongside Greenfield’s memories, paints a picture of a global star content, at least for one week, to be just another member of the cast.
