Kate Winslet recently learned firsthand how differently the film industry treats women as they age, in an exchange with a female director that laid bare an uncomfortable double standard.

Winslet asked the female director why she didn’t just go gray, after the director admitted that she had to dye her roots every five weeks. She told Kate that no one wants to employ a gray-haired 62-year-old woman.

Winslet’s reaction was to put her hand over her mouth. The director was right, and they both knew it.
