Dr. Dre has a blunt message for anyone unnerved by artificial intelligence: the technology isn’t the problem — you are.

“I think the only people that see it as a threat are the people who have trouble creating.” That’s Dr. Dre, speaking alongside his longtime business partner Jimmy Iovine in an interview the New York Times published Sunday. Coming from one of the most influential producers in hip-hop history — a man whose name is stamped on decades of era-defining records — the comment is bound to sting the skeptics.
Dre, 61, framed today’s AI anxiety as a rerun of arguments the music world has already had. He compared the current wave of doubters to the people who once dismissed the drum machine and the synthesizer as gimmicks or shortcuts. “It’s a new tool for creativity,” he said. “Some people are afraid of learning new things.”

And he’s not talking about this from the sidelines. Dre says he’s already folding the technology into his own process, using it “as a tool to see what it would do with what I just did” — feeding it his own work and watching where it goes. Iovine backed him up, claiming producer Timbaland is doing the same and hinting that plenty of others are keeping quiet about it. There are, he said, “a lot of closet AI producers out there.”

The endorsement lands at an especially tense moment for the industry, where AI’s role in music is anything but settled. Last week, indie publisher Round Hill Music sued Suno and Anthropic for copyright infringement, accusing the companies of scraping hundreds of songs to train their models without permission. Suno has already been sued by all three major labels, and Apple Music says it will begin labeling AI-derived songs later this year. For every producer quietly experimenting, there’s a lawyer or a label drawing lines in the sand.
For all the weight of the debate, Dre kept things grounded when the conversation turned personal. Asked what he’d most recently typed into an AI chatbot, he didn’t reach for anything profound about the future of music. His answer: “How do you put on muscle and lose fat at the same time?”
