Suri Cruise Legally Dropped Tom Cruise’s Last Name at 20 and Now Goes by Suri Noelle

Suri Cruise wants nothing on paper that ties her to her famous father. She’s taken her middle name, Noelle, and made it official.

Noelle is Suri’s middle name, and it’s now the last name she’s chosen to live under. The 20-year-old daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes legally dropped Cruise, according to Page Six.

Katie Holmes filed for divorce in 2012, and Suri has been raised by her mother in New York in the years since. Tom Cruise has rarely been seen with her in public in that time.

The estrangement between Cruise and his daughter has long been the subject of speculation, and much of it circles back to Scientology. Cruise is one of the church’s most prominent members, and reports over the years have suggested that its teachings — particularly practices around cutting off people deemed hostile to the organization — may factor into the distance between father and daughter. Holmes is not a Scientologist, and the widely held theory is that her exit from the marriage and the faith placed both her and Suri outside Cruise’s world.

Holmes’s 2012 divorce filing was swift and tightly managed, and it caught much of the public off guard. It was widely reported that she planned the split carefully, reportedly using disposable phones and moving quickly to secure primary custody of Suri. The speed and secrecy of it all fueled the narrative that she was trying to protect her daughter from the church’s influence.

Her father, Martin Holmes, an attorney in Ohio, is said to have played a central role in orchestrating the divorce. Reports at the time credited his legal maneuvering with helping Katie reach a settlement in a matter of weeks, an unusually fast resolution for a high-profile split.

There has also been persistent speculation about the terms of that settlement. Some reports have suggested Holmes agreed to conditions around publicly dating in the years immediately following the divorce, though the specifics of the agreement were never confirmed. Whatever the arrangement, Suri stayed with her mother in New York, largely out of her father’s public life ever since.
