A Woman with a Bachelor’s and a Master’s Says BOTH Walmart and Target Rejected Her for a Cashier Job

She did everything they told her to do: get the degree, then go back for the master’s to lock in a job. Now she says she can’t get hired to ring up groceries, and the freelance gigs she picks up on the side pay more than either diploma ever has.

The freelance brand work a creator does on the side pays her more than her bachelor’s and master’s degrees ever did, she says, and it’s the only reason she can cover her bills.

In a TikTok posted under the handle @emir.eneer, she said Walmart turned her down for a cashier role. “I just got rejected from Walmart as a cashier. What the f–k is so wrong with the job market that I have a bachelor’s degree?” she said, adding that she went back for a master’s at her parents’ urging because they promised more school would “really get you a spot in the job market solidified.”

A separate video says Target rejected her too, and it’s the one that took off, passing 16.7 million views. In it, she lays out the full arc:

“I just got denied a job from Target. I have a f–ing bachelor’s degree. I spent four years on a bachelor’s degree, and then my parents in great old America told me, go get your master’s degree, because that will absolutely solidify you a job. I can’t get a cashier’s job. I cannot get a minimum wage job. If I was not making money doing UGC on SideShift, which literally anybody could do, a 5 year old, I would be in a ditch. I wouldn’t be able to pay to live. So I have to ask, America, what are we doing? How are we supposed to make money? How are we supposed to live?”

In a follow-up, she wondered whether she’d been read as overqualified: “I know that I have a bachelor’s and master’s, of course, but so does everyone else.”

Her advice to other grads stuck in the same spot: “I’m not saying your degree is useless. I’m just saying you might want to use this uptick in freelancing to get yourself a foot in the door until you can find your dream job.” Walmart and Target haven’t publicly commented.
