What does it take to become an Eagle scout? Ask these three Paris boys – SWTImes

Triple Eagles

Three boys from the Paris Boy Scout Troop 41 have become Eagle Scouts this year.

Shane Baker, 15, joined Devin Athey, 16, and Alex Stengel, 14, in earning the rank of Eagle Scout during a ceremony Saturday.

The rank of Eagle Scout is the highest position in the Boy Scouts. Troop leader Nathan Brent said that only about 4% of Boy Scouts end up becoming Eagle Scouts. He said the ceremony was “an occasion for pride and joy.”

Part of the requirements for becoming an Eagle Scout includes a community project. For his project, Baker built planters for the county library. His goal was to give older people in Paris an opportunity to grow plants.

For his project, Athey built a receptacle for people to leave American flags that need to be retired. The Boy Scouts will pick up these flags and properly retire them respectfully for community members.

“A lot of people didn’t know anybody to take theirs to, so they’d just throw them away, and one of our big things is respecting the flag, so you respectfully retire them,” Athey said. “So I wanted a place where people could find a place for people to put their flags that need to be retired, so they could be properly retired.”

For his project, Stengel renovated the baseball complex at Subiaco Academy.

“It was a good thing to basically help out the school,” Stengel said.

Another requirement for becoming an eagle scout is that each member has to have collected 21 badges, including 14 Eagle badges, Baker said.

Some of those badges include cooking, personal fitness, emergency preparedness, camping and family life, Brent said.
