Everything We Know Will Happen In House of the Dragon Season 4

After last night’s House of the Dragon finale, Rhaenyra and the Blacks still technically have the upper hand, but morally and politically, they are in terrible shape.

Because Ormund Hightower used children as human shields during the battle in Tumbleton and because Rhaenyra murdered the High Septon, she comes to be known as “Rhaenyra the Cruel”. The bloody destruction of the Dance of Dragons has already claimed the lives of two of Rhaenyra’s children —Lucerys and Jacaerys—while Alicent has also lost two children, Jaehaerys and Helaena. Rhaenys, Otto, Ormund, and Criston Cole have also died as well as numerous unnamed soldiers and civilians. Season 4 of House of the Dragon will wrap up the storylines still in flux and finish out the Dance.

Here’s where things stand as of the finale:

Aegon reunites with his brother Aemond at Harrenhal.

• Aegon is alive and reunited with Sunfyre.
• Aemond is alive at Harrenhal with Alys Rivers.
• Daeron Targaryen’s fate is unknown after the battle of Tumbleton.

• Ulf has gone rogue and drunkenly killed an untold number of men from the Green and Black armies as well as civilians.
• Mysaria has been exiled by Rhaenyra but is still dangerous.
• The High Septon has been murdered on Rhaenyra’s orders, likely turning the people of King’s Landing against her.
• Corlys, Baela, Hugh and other allies are increasingly uneasy with Rhaenyra, who is beginning to resemble the terrifying queen that history will eventually remember as Rhaenyra the Cruel.

Looking ahead to season 4, we know that this will be the final season of House of the Dragon. The Dance of Dragons will conclude and while the show does deviate from the George R. R. Martin books, we have a good idea of what to expect from the final season. Stop reading here if you don’t want any book spoilers for the rest of the House of the Dragon.

Here are events of the Dance of the Dragons that have not been depicted on House of the Dragon yet, and likely will be in season 4:

• There is a second major battle at Tumbleton. Deaths include: Addam Velaryon, Hugh Hammer, Prince Daeron Targaryen, Seasmoke, Vermithor, and Tessarion.
• Daemon and Aemond fight over the God’s Eye, near Harrenhal. In the book, Daemon and Aemond both die during this fight along with Vhagar and Caraxes.

Season 4 of House of the Dragon will likely show Daemon and Aemond in a battle to the death.

• Rhaenyra’s unpopularity combined with food shortages, taxes and the devastation of the war cause the people of King’s Landing rise up against Rhaenyra and the dragons. They storm the Dragonpit and kill several dragons.
• During the Storming of the Dragonpit, Joffrey attempts to ride Syrax to rescue the trapped dragons. He falls from the dragon and dies. Syrax is subsequently killed by the mob.
• Rhaenyra is forced to flee King’s Landing and returns to Dragonstone.
• Her guards at Dragonstone turn against her and hand her over to Aegon, who feeds her to his dragon, Sunfyre while her son, Aegon III, watches. In the book, only her lower left leg is left behind. Afterwards, Sunfyre’s health declines and he eventually dies.
• Aegon returns to King’s Landing and sits on the Iron Throne but eventually his men turn on him and serve him poisoned wine.

No one wants Aegon as their ruler.

• The death of the dragons. Before the war, there are about 20 living dragons (16 were seen in season 1 of House of the Dragon). When the war ends, there are only four dragons left: Silverwing (currently ridden by Ulf the White), Sheepstealer (ridden by Rhaena), Cannibal (a feral dragon), and Morning (a newly hatched dragon). Morning is eventually the last dragon and dies a few decades later.
• Rhaenyra’s son with Daemon, Aegon the Younger, ultimately becomes King Aegon III, sitting on the Iron Throne at the end of the war. This comes about as a compromise: Aegon the Younger marries King Aegon II’s only remaining child, Princess Jaehaera, to join the two branches of House Targaryen.
• Cregan Stark arrives in King’s Landing. He becomes Hand and conducts a purge/judgment of those responsible for prolonging the war. This is called the Hour of the Wolf.

Alicent is surrounded by butterflies after Helaena dies.

• Alicent is imprisoned in her own apartments in the Red Keep for her safety and to prevent further political unrest. She spends her time crying and talking to herself until she eventually dies of Winter Fever during the Hour of the Wolf.

Season 4 of House of the Dragon is set to premiere on HBO in 2028.
