The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Is Now Fully Fenced Off, and the Government Blames “Leftist Activists” for the Early Lockdown

Chain-link fencing now wraps the entire Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, blocking visitor access just days before the July 4 fireworks. Signs along the barrier advertise the Independence Day show and warn “DANGER: EXPLOSIVES. Authorized personnel only.”

The Interior Department and National Park Service say the fencing is routine, since one of the fireworks launch pads sits around the pool every year. This time it went up earlier than planned. The DOI cited “the increase in vandalism by leftist activists” as the reason for accelerating the timeline.

The vandalism claims trace back to the pool’s $16 million renovation, finished in early June, which Trump had directed be coated in an “American flag blue” tinted liner ahead of the country’s 250th anniversary. The new surface quickly started peeling, and green algae appeared in the water. The dark color has been flagged as potentially worsening a long-running algae problem by absorbing more heat.

In a late-June court filing, NPS Deputy Director Frank Lands said that on or about June 9, the caulk over the new foam sealant was deliberately cut with a sharp knife or razor, surface material was destroyed, and roughly 70 fence post tops were thrown into the pool. In a separate incident, fencing around the pool was forcibly pulled down and thrown in. The Interior Department and U.S. Park Police have reported 7 arrests and 7 federal citations tied to vandalism or unauthorized contact, including a former Olympic cyclist charged with misdemeanor destruction of government property after reaching in to touch a piece of peeling liner.

Viral images showing barbed wire and guard towers around the pool have been debunked as AI-generated fakes. Snopes confirmed that authentic photos from Getty, Reuters, AP, and AFP show only standard chain-link fencing, like the Reuters images here.

National Guard members and U.S. Park Police are patrolling the area, backed by new AI cameras with tracking and loudspeakers. Tourists still gather to peer at the Lincoln Memorial through the fence. The pool is set to be drained for permanent repairs after July 4.
