This ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ Fan Theory Is Right—The Show Isn’t Over Yet

UPDATE: A MOVIE IS CONFIRMED. Read the full details here.

Today, we said our final goodbyes to The Summer I Turned Pretty—or did we? Almost immediately after today’s episode dropped, fans began to speculate that this might not be the end of the road for our favorite characters.

First of all, let’s talk about that letter from Jenny Han at the end of the episode:

What’s really caught fans’ eyes is the final line: “Maybe we’ll meet again one summer in Cousins. Until then—”

That doesn’t sound like a definitive ending to me! Many fans began to wonder if there weren’t more in store for Conrad and Belly. Not to mention the song choice for the final scenes, in which Phoebe Bridgers croons: “Anyway, don’t be a stranger.”

Fans have pointed out that there still seems to be some loose ends that haven’t yet been tied up. While Conrad and Belly did get their ending together, we don’t get to see their reunion with the other characters. We didn’t get to see much time with them together and happy, period (which, honestly, isn’t unusual in the romance genre, but I digress). We also missed out on some key parts of the book’s ending—namely, the epilogue.

Book spoilers ahead!

In the epilogue of the books, newly weds Belly and Conrad sneak away from their wedding at Cousins to go to the beach. Conrad picks Belly up and jumps into the ocean, mirroring their long-held tradition of “belly flops” (where the boys would throw Belly into the pool), but this time joining her. In the epilogue, we’re also finally given Belly’s letter from Susannah that she’s supposed to open on her wedding day.

Since we saw the letter existed, it’s not unreasonable to think that it’ll come back into play in the future. And now that there are confirmations that the fan theories are correct—we’re getting a whole movie!—it’s pretty clear that this was never meant to really be the end. Belly and Conrad will get the ending they deserve yet!

Anyway, while we can’t say exactly what the future holds, we do know this—even though the traditional show might be at its end, fans’ Taylor Swift-style speculations surely aren’t, and I don’t see those going away anytime soon. In that regard, we truly are infinite.
