In the wake of an unarmed Black man being fatally shot by police, Grand Rapids Community College officials are looking to help students process the tragedy and understand their rights to protest during a series of five student centered conversations.
The first conversation is “Know your rights/protesting safety.” It will involve the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Youth Division sharing vital information on the understanding of how to safely protest and understand your rights. This will happen virtually on Monday, April 18 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The second is “Real Talk: Academic Success and Self Care.” Counseling and Career Development will spend some time talking about finals week and how to take care of yourself. This will take place on Tuesday, April 19 from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the GRCC Student Center multi-purpose room.
The third conversation is “Real Talk: A history of protest.” Chief Equity and Inclusion officer Dr. B. Afeni McNeely Cobham will highlight the history of protesting college campuses. This will be held virtually on Wednesday, April 20 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The fourth is “Real Talk: Self Care in a Time like this.” Counseling and Career Development will cover the importance of self care as finals week is right around the corner while processing what’s happening in our community. This will be Monday, April 25 from 12:30 p.m to 1:30 p.m at GRCC’s Raleigh J Finkelstein Hall (RJF Hall), Rooms 108 and 109.
The fifth and last conversation is “Real Talk: Lunch with Campus Police.” GRCC Police Chief Rebecca Whitman will host a space for students to come and share their perspectives on how to continue building relationships with campus police. This will take place Monday, April 25 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at RJF Hall, Rooms 108-109.
