Free fitness classes for women are starting in March as part of a Gwent Police initiative.
The classes are designed to improve the confidence, fitness and strength of women in Gwent who do not feel able to go to a mixed-gender gym.
The scheme is operating as part of the “safer streets” campaign run by Gwent Police with Home Office funding.

The free classes will be circuits-based, and include a variety of types of exercises including cardio, bodyweight, and weight training.
They will be run by personal trainer Debbie Gliniany, who runs Mamau Ffit, a fitness community for women.
Debbie, 37, started Mamau Ffit in January 2020 and continued online during the pandemic. Her classes started out as a way for new mums to keep fit, but have expanded to include exercise for all women.
Debbie said: “A lot of the women who I’ve spoken to say that they want to get into fitness but feel intimidated in a regular gym.
“While a lot of women do go to the gym, these spaces still seem to be dominated by men. In most gyms, the majority of personal trainers are also men. This can be really intimidating for some women.
“I want to provide that space for women to come and feel safe. I’ve supported friends and family who have suffered domestic abuse, and I have been a victim myself. I can offer support to women who have been through difficult or traumatic things.”
The workouts will suit women who are new to fitness or regularly exercising, as different levels of each exercise will be shown for progression.
The classes will be at Maesglas Community Centre, Newport (Tuesday, 10am) and Llanteilio Pertholey Community Centre, Abergavenny (Monday, 1pm).
Spaces on March classes are fully booked, but you can join a waiting list for April classes by emailing Debbie on info@mamauffit.com.
