A worldwide pandemic. Economic turmoil. Workforce crisis. War in Ukraine. The past few years have taken their toll on not only Oklahoma but Oklahomans. According to recent reports, alcoholism, drug addiction, suicides and eating disorders are all increasing. People constantly share about the stress and burnout they’re experiencing. After decades of working in the nonprofit sector – a segment of society that is no stranger to stress – I know that wellness, mindfulness and intention are the keys to navigating high-tension situations.
Fatigue, and not just physical, feeds our current stress merry-go-round. We are all exhausted – mentally, emotionally and physically. In the nonprofit sector, compassion fatigue is common. The emotional impact of helping others can lead to stress and trauma for the caretakers. The sector is filled with men and women who are hyper-focused on service and fulfilling an organization’s mission – many times to the detriment of their own well-being.
The pace our society operates, coupled with the latest tragedy flashing across our screens, leads to decision fatigue. Each day confronts us with a new challenge we have to overcome. Leadership has never been more difficult. Those in charge are now navigating employees’ emotions while pulling organizations back from the economic brink.
It’s overwhelming.
Acknowledging the problem is the first step, but we cannot stop there. We must put ourselves on the calendar. Self-care will not happen on its own. In order to relieve stress and mitigate its negative impacts, we must spend time centering our minds, calming our spirits and understanding our limits. Have the courage to prioritize the things that feed you. Take the time to respond to situations instead of reacting. Choose where to put your attention and skip over the things you cannot control. They’ll only cause frustration.
More than anything, remember that calm and stability begin with giving yourself and one another grace. Leading with kindness will not only help your stress levels, it will make Oklahoma a better place.
