Montvale is urging its residents to commit to their health and to get outside with a fitness challenge that’s set to launch next month.

The challenge has already attracted 60 participants ahead of its March 1 start date. There will be dietitians, yoga instructors, personal trainers and life coaches who will be working with the borough on a volunteer basis. Residents can take part in fitness classes and outings.

“After two years of the pandemic, people want to get out and walk and meet people and exercise,” Mayor Mike Ghassali said.

The level of challenge is up to the individual. “We could pledge what our goals are — someone may say, ‘I want to lose 5 pounds,’ others may want to lose 10 pounds, and maybe we commit to 1,000 pounds in total. That would be awesome,” he said.

Any resident can register for the challenge on the borough’s website and outline specific fitness goals. Montvale Recreation Director Lisa Dent said there are 60 participants and seven trainers signed up so far for the challenge, which runs until June 30.

The schedule of events will be posted soon, Ghassali said, with details of the activities and venues. All the classes will occur in person in indoor and outdoor spaces.

This is the first year that the borough has introduced the challenge. “We are working with some business to see if we can get coupons or free memberships to the gyms,” the mayor said, as a possible reward for completing the challenge.

There is no age requirement to register, and it is free.

“It is good for the community to come together,” said Ghassali, who will be conducting weekly walks on Saturday mornings. “It is something that will bring us together.”
